The discipline refers to the educational tracks offered to students of the curricula for bachelor's degree while mastering the optional course of English in accordance with the Concept of Development of Foreign-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students. Students are enrolled to the course with the entrance test score of 60 or higher. The course is designed to introduce students to the language of economics and to help students communicate effectively in the workspace using the language of business, building effective business communications. The course gives insight into basic economic concepts and offers practical training in functional business skills such as collaboration, challenging conversations, presentations, analysing risk and maintaining relationships, which allows for personalization of the learning experience with a structured modular approach that gives the flexibility to focus on specific needs and learning outcomes. The course ongoing control types include essays, vocabulary and grammar quizzes, reading and listening tests, presentations, discussions and dialogues. The blocking elements are the winter test and the final assessment. The final grade consists of the following elements: 0.1 for attendance, 0.1 for the English Grammar and Vocabulary Test, 0.1 for the home assignment, 0.2 for the written assessment, 0.2 for the oral assessment, and 0.3 for the final assessment.
The course interim assessment consists of an essay, reading and listening tests. Completing the course enables students to advance their English to the advanced level (HSE Scale 70-79).
Learning Objectives
To acquire language mastery relevant to common business communication areas, through enhancement of business vocabulary and grammar.
To master presentation agility and fluency with the various skills, practical training in functional business areas such as presentations, negotiations, meeting facilitation, and brainstorming.
To acquire basic skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking in the academic environment.

Develop skills of target listening and extracting information from texts of various types (lectures, interviews, discussions, etc).
To develop skills in writing essays.
To develop skills of writing emails.
Develop skills in delivering a monologue (informative/descriptive/reasoning)
Develop skills of using basic listening techniques (predicting, understanding main ideas and details)
To develop presentation skills for both individual and team projects
Develop skills of using basic reading techniques (understanding main ideas and details)
Develop skills of target reading and extracting information from texts of various types (articles, blogs).
Develop grammatical accuracy to enable clear, precise, and confident communication
Expand lexical range to enable clear, precise, and confident communication
Attendance grade is calculated using a 10-point grading scale based on a student’s attendance rate.
