SOFL students develop practical skills through collaborations with 39 partner companies. They gain hands-on experience by completing internships, implementing professionally-oriented projects, solving real-world case studies in their chosen fields, and receiving feedback from industry experts.
SOFL comprehensive practical training system includes:
– In-house internships (for the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication’)
You can complete an internship at one of the 39 SOFL partner companies or find another company independently.
For Bachelor’s students, the internship are organised in the Module 3 of Year 3, for Master’s students – Module 3 of Year 2.
When selecting an internship placement, it is important to ensure that all scheduled tasks align with your specialisation.

– Practice-oriented projects (for Bachelor’s Students of ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication’ Programme)
Fourth-year Bachelor’s students are required to complete a practice-oriented project.
Students can find a project on HSE ‘SmartPro’ platform or choose one of the projects offered by SOFL partners.
Participation in such projects allows students to work on relevant cases in their professional field and receive feedback from leading industry experts.

– Projects from the ‘Project Fair’ list (for Master’s Students of ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication’ Programme)
The internship is aimed at finding solutions to a practical or theoretically relevant problem.
You can select any project on HSE SmartPro platform (for research and applied projects) or from the Project Fair list (for service projects)
The project has a minimum value of 3 credits and can be completed at any stage of studies following a flexible schedule. However, it is recommended to complete it within one academic year. The project report must be submitted no later than in Module 3 of Year 2.

– Projects and business cases (for Master’s programme ‘Chinese in Intercultural Business Communication’)
Students of the online Master’s programme ‘Chinese in Intercultural Business Communication’ are also actively involved in project and research work.
During the 1st year of their studies, students are engaged in the team work within the project ‘Digital and Online Tools in Professional Activities’.
This project offers an opportunity to explore and test modern digital solutions used in intercultural business communication, ranging from online collaboration platforms to tools for translation, analytics, and business communication.
During the 2nd year of studies, students are required to work on a business case that will be the basis of their Master’s thesis. The project involves creating solutions to practical problems related to intercultural communication, marketing, media support, business negotiations, and adapting business strategies for the Chinese or Russian market.

– Term papers and final theses
Term papers and theses are the integral elements of students’ practical training, which is focused on developing research and project skills.
Students can work on these projects individually or in pairs, resulting in a completed research study or a project product.
Topics cover a wide range of fields within linguistics (language history, structural linguistics, psycholinguistics, etc), intercultural communication, translation studies, foreign language teaching, and interdisciplinary context.
The annual SOFL Career Day provides opportunities to meet prospective employers, learn about their activities, discover available career opportunities, and participate in master classes given by leading experts.
The event enables students and graduates to:
- Attend open presentations by employers and learn about their business activities;
- Learn about available job openings and internship opportunities;
- Receive HR assistance in preparing well-crafted resumes;
- Participate in master classes, quizzes, and competitions organised by our partners;
- Solve real-world case studies from industry leaders, etc.
