Ksenia Chermoshentseva, Student Affairs Manager at the School of Foreign Languages, has extensive experience with intercultural communication going back to her early childhood. This experience helps her in her work—students of the School of Foreign Languages, after all, come from all over the world. Elizaveta Babasyan, a first-year student of the FLaIC programme, interviewed her and asked about the uniqueness of HSE students, as well as about ways of communicating with young people.

Every March and April, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) traditionally holds four student conferences. The conferences have much in common, but each of them still has their own history, traditions, and unique profile. While waiting for the student science marathon, we met with the organizers and asked them about the specific features of each conference and innovations for this year.

In 2021, the HSE French Club celebrates its 15^th anniversary. On February 15,Louis Ernou, a French student currently doing his Master’s in Russian Studies at HSE University, gave a talk about French history for the club members. To learn more about the French Club, we spoke with Louis Ernou, Natalia Zhukova, head of the HSE French Club and tutor at the School of Foreign Languages, and Valeria Vazhenina, student head of the Club and first-year student of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication.

A new track called Text and Discourse is being added to the bachelor’s programme in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication. We talked to Anna Sebryuk, Associate Professor at School of Foreign languages, and discussed discourse, features of the new track, and opportunities for students.

Within this project, a group of students is engaged in comparing different approaches and strategies for the transition from offline to online education that universities around the world are using. The project team are also developing useful materials for teachers and students. We talked to Arina Barasy, a 2nd-year student of the Master's programme in Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication, who is the head of the project group. She told us about the objectives and achievements of the project.

A Project group from the School of Foreign Languages is developing three blended online courses, English for Academic Purposes, Legal English, and Business English. We spoke to Diana Burimskaya, the head of the group, about these new initiatives.

In late November, students from the School of Foreign Languages presented their research at the International Linguistics Conference for Students (StuTS).

This September, HSE launched a virtual centre designed to find talent in Mongolia. Bayarsaikhan Nomundar, a student of FLaIC, has been appointed its manager. She told us about the benefits it will bring to prospective students from this country.

In summer of 2020, students and teachers of the FLAIC programme took part in the International Summer University for the second time. The project gives students an opportunity to enrich their educational experience outside of the classroom by solving real intercultural problems through English.

On August 28, at an orientation session for foreign students at HSE University, graduates of the School of Foreign Languages presented an audio guide to help students navigate HSE University’s Basmannaya complex, as well as a printed guide, ‘Enjoy Moscow with Us!’, that contains 10 unique walking tours around Moscow.
