Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed for Bachelor's students mastering English within a Management curriculum. The course is offered within the HSE “Concept of the Development of English-language Communicative Competence of HSE Students ” and adheres to the "Regulations for Interim and Ongoing Assessment of Students at National Research University Higher School of Economics” . The course is based on authentic materials from The Financial Times and The New York Times and encourages students to engage in a variety of topics, from career to social media, sustainability, impact investment, globalization, and many others. Besides reading and watching authentic content that has not been adapted for non-native speakers, the students get engaged in research, pair- and group-work to investigate the world of business and practice communication skills that are vital for entrepreneurs and managers.

  • The purpose of the course is to 1) prepare students to navigate the world of international business; 2) equip them with a set of skills in written and oral business communication that would help them develop into global managers able to do and understand business across borders and cultures; 3) improve all four language skills – speaking, reading, listening and writing – in Bachelor students working within a Management curriculum; 4) foster the discussion of most debated topics in the business world today, from entrepreneurship to sustainability, impact investing, globalization, regulation and deregulation, as well as the challenges of the pandemic and many others.; 5) master listening skills; 6) practice skills in writing emails (business correspondence), CV, report/review writing; monologue (descriptive/informative/reasoning), dialogue (negotiations, meetings, job interviews, teleconferencing) speech and team presentations.

  • To develop skills of using basic listening techniques (predicting, understanding main ideas and details)
  • To develop skills of using basic reading techniques skimming and scanning (predicting, understanding main ideas, understanding details)
  • To deliver a monologue: descriptive/informative/reasoning
  • To develop skills in writing e-mails (business correspondence)
  • To develop skills in writing reports
  • To follow extended speech and complex lines of arguments
  • To make a presentation (can give reasons in support or against a particular point of view, give the advantages and disadvantages of various opinions)
  • To understand specialised complex longer texts*/articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems (CEFR)

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Oral Assessment
    Oral assessment includes a monologue on a given topic, a presentation and further discussion, and other oral activities. The elements of oral assessment cannot be retaken.
  • non-blocking Final Assessment
    Period of Final Assessment: the final exam is held in class within 10 days before the exam period online on MS Teams platform. The release of examination papers: during the session. The exam consists of 3 parts: Listening (30%), Reading (30%) and Writing (40%) respectively in the total mark for the exam. 0 points in case of cheating. Retaking exams: till the 15th of October 2022. Time limit: 80 minutes online/offline. Tasks complexity: В2. Exam structure: 1. Listening (L) Listen to the text and complete the tasks 1-10. max. 10 points 2. Reading (R) Read the text and complete the tasks 1-10. max. 10 points 3. Writing (W) Write a review/report. review assessment criteria/ report assessment criteria. Grading formula: L*0,3+R*0,3 +W*0,4 = 10

    Independent work includes activities that students do at home, in the classroom and online work. The elements of independent work cannot be retaken.

    Includes written tests: min 1 listening test, min 1 reading test, min 2 vocabulary and grammar tests, min 1 email, min 1 report
