English Language for Bachelor's Degree Students
SOFL implements HSE University's Concept for the Development of Students' Foreign Language Communicative Competence.
Grounded in the international system of English language proficiency levels, this framework is designed to accommodate the diverse starting levels of first-year students and their individual academic preferences.
It also enables students to track their progress in English throughout their university studies. Furthermore, the Concept establishes uniform assessment criteria across all courses, ensuring greater transparency and objectivity in evaluating learning outcomes.
First-year students can select from a range of English language disciplines tailored to various professional fields. Based on their placement test results, students choose a first-semester course that matches their proficiency level. They also have the flexibility to select a course one level below their tested result if they prefer. After mid-term testing in December, students may either continue in their current course or switch to a different specialisation and/or proficiency level.
For the second-year students the ‘English Language’ module comprises two compulsory components: ‘Preparation for English Language Certification Exams’ and an elective course.
All HSE undergraduate and specialist students must demonstrate English language proficiency within the B2 to C1 range (as defined by the CEFR) by the end of their second year.
